From the Ceiling to the Floor!

Ex: Composite Steel Deck Floor System
The new construction at the library now has levels!!  The crew has been working hard to get in the Composite Steel Deck Floor System.  This consists of a high strength structural steel deck- that's all those corrugated metal sheets you see layed on the new "floors".  When this is complete, a structural concrete slab will be poured on top of these sheets.  Composite Metal Floor Deck is typically used for multi-story buildings and creates a reinforced concrete slab that serves the dual purpose of permanent form and positive reinforcement.  In other words, it'll be extra sturdy!!

Library Bones

We know you've all been waiting to see something "BIGGER" going on with the library construction.  Well it's here!!!  If you haven't been by the library lately get ready to be amazed at what you will see!!!  More beams are going up everyday and now you can begin to see the skeleton of the new library!

(Looking at construction from parking lot)

But what exactly are you looking at?  When the building is complete this will be the location of our new Community Room on the first floor and above it you'll find the Administrative Offices and Board Room/Meeting Room.  You'll probably notice that the beams are placed in such a way that when the building is complete it will match our current building.  Bricks, roof tiles and more will match perfectly to make it appear as though the library was always that way.  The architects chose to do this because the current architecture of the library has always been thought of as quite beautiful and didn't want to change the integrity of the building.

"Beaming with Pride"

This week the library has gone to the beams!!  Saturday's Beam Signing party was greatly attended and we received a huge 220 signatures!!!

Thanks everyone for stopping by and showing your support!

Big Question of the day?!
Where's the beam going to go?

Stay posted!

Check out how the crew carefully placed each beam into it's new home.  It takes some fancy footwork and great balance!

Changes are inevitable

Preparing inside the library for construction meant the emptying of our community room and storytime room. This is because in order for the new roof to meet the old roof the crew must remove the old roof over these rooms, hence the demolition going on. Say goodbye to the ceiling and lights because they are outta there! We'll also start seeing new beams added into this area and plumbing for new bathrooms.

The show must go on!! Storytime is part of our livelihood! Check out how we've adapted to these changes so that we can continue to provide great programs!

Preparing the ground

After a day of snow, the crew spreads stone on top of the dirt to prepare for the "slab on grade" (meaning the pouring of cement on top of the stone to create the floor foundation- the cement floors of the new basement). The stone also helps with drainage underneath the cement.

Before the cement is actually poured we'll be preparing outside (AND Inside) the library for the structural steel. Our community room and storytime room will be the first to be closed off for the installation of the steel. We are really going to start seeing some big changes over the next 2 months!! Stay tuned!

Waterproofing the Foundation!

Even a few snow flurries can't stop the Men in White! Here we see the crew applying the damp-proofing material. This is a regular part of foundation and backfill operations.

Pouring the Footings, 2-11-11

The weather hasn't stopped our construction crews from excavating the foundation and building forms for the footings.

It's now Monday, 2-14-11 and the concrete trucks are here, pouring more footings, and forms for the foundation walls are going up!

The sun is out! Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!
